21 July 2019 A Beautiful Day of Ocean Adventures
Sunday 21 July was the perfect day in Cape Town for outdoor and ocean adventures. At Captain Jacks we planned a few Boat Based Whale Watching trips for the day. There had been lots of land based Humpback Whale sightings, so we were eager to find some whales out at sea.
We set off just after 9am, towards Vulcan Rock, which is just outside of Hout Bay and then ventured towards Kommetjie, where our land based spotter had advised us to go. With eyes intently peeled on sea around us, we finally saw some blows – two Humpback Whales heading South at speed. When we came up alongside them we observed that the bigger of the two whales had quite a bit of whale lice on it, and was missing a dorsal fin! Perhaps and old injury inflicted by an Orca when the whale was much younger?
We returned via Duiker Island – we will always include Duiker Island on our itinerary where we can. The young seals are very playful and curious so they usually put on a good show.
Heading back we saw lots of splashing near Hout Bay – a very active group of Humpback Whales! The whales were breaching with lots of flipper action as well.
On the next trip for the day, our guests were lucky to see a pod of 400+ Long Beaked Common Dolphin! A huge pod swimming just outside Hout Bay heading towards Kommetjie. Of course they also saw some whales.
The last boat trip of the day was a quick one as we had to return before dark. Too many blows to count. We followed one group and got some nice camera shots. The views were breathtaking, with sunset hues over the surrounding mountains.
